Task 3: Design

After analyzing the design of your choice in Task 2, you will now produce a work of design, inspired/influenced by the one you had analyzed, or as a reaction to it. You should also apply your knowledge of design principles in your creation. You may use any medium and/or materials that are suitable to convey your visual message. Direct use of photographs is not permitted.
  • Must include:
1. a recap of Task 3 brief.
2. some visual references (cite the sources) that inspire your own ideas.
3. 3-5 sketches (manual/digital) of your ideas.
4. final design in A4 size, JPEG.
5. a rationale, in about 150-200 words, explaining/defending the decisions made in your design, the meaning/purpose of the design, and the design principles found in the design.
6. feedback from the lecturer.

Title: We Shall Return.
Figure 2.2 Week 5 (03/07/2024) We Shall Return by Abu Shtayyah.

Artist: Imad Abu Shtayyah
Year: 2014
Size: 182 x 142 cm
Medium: Oil on Canvas

Task 1: Exploration Brief
  • I decided to choose "Peace, Justice, and Strong Institutions." "Goal 16 is about promoting peaceful and inclusive societies, providing access to justice for all, and building effective, accountable, and inclusive institutions at all levels. People everywhere should be free of fear from all forms of violence and feel safe as they go about their lives whatever their ethnicity, faith, or sexual orientation."Martin. “Peace, Justice, and Strong Institutions - United Nations Sustainable
Figure 2.3 Week 2 (02/13/2024) Peace, justice, and strong institutions.

Goal Description.
  • What I can conclude is that the goal of promoting Peace, Justice, and Strong Institutions is vital for any society. The pursuit of these objectives requires a social and political alteration, as the initiatives prioritize the well-being of all citizens. The establishment of a strong and fair legal system is crucial for promoting justice, this involves an independent law that is transparent for the judiciary. And a law that could uphold basic human rights.
Explain and Identify
  • One of the development goals of UNSGD is to aware everyone of the world of the war between Russia and Ukraine, Promoting justice based on the genocide in Palestine is a way to support the Palestinian people and bring more attention to human rights violations that are happening. Not to mention a permanent ceasefire hasn't been applied yet. This is why I want to focus on the purpose of Justice in War crimes and genocide. With the emphasis on a large woman as the dominant figure, while wearing colorful traditional Palestinian clothes that contrast with the dull colors of the destroyed buildings. Most of the artist's works revolve around a Palestinian woman that depicted as the pure protector of the culture. There's a balance between her hands with the buildings that could form like an arrow shape which proves her body language that she is resilient to what's happening. (149 words)
So my main goal for this task is to create impactful artwork to make people aware of the genocide and injustice that is happening in Palestine right now.

Task 2: Visual Analysis Brief

1. Observation

The first thing that catches our eyes is the large woman standing determinedly on top of the destroyed building, which emphasizes her as the piece's main focus. Her hand replacement holds a weight of balance. The contrast between a reddish-warm and brown-greyish palette could be interpreted as a comparison between energetic and lively colors versus grounding colors. The woman plays a central figure and there is a hierarchy between the woman and the destroyed buildings. The woman’s gaze fixated on the land behind her rather than the destruction below her.

2. Analysis

The woman plays a central figure and there is a hierarchy between the woman and the destroyed buildings. The woman’s gaze fixated on the land behind her rather than the destruction below her. The artist has stated that the land she is staring at is Jerusalem, and you could see the Al-Aqsa mosque. If I edited the artwork to be in grayscale, with or without the colors the woman remains to be the main focus. Using the Golden ratio shows the dynamic of the viewer’s eyes from the woman to the buildings. Leading the artwork to have a symmetrical balance.

Figure 2.3 Week 5 (03/07/2024) Analysis #1 & #2.

A reddish warm color palette often features colors such as red, orange, and yellow. These colors are vibrant and engaging and can create a sense of warmth and strength of will. The contrast between these two color palettes could be seen as a reflection of the duality of energy and grounding. The interpretation of this contrast will depend on the context in which it is used, as well as the personal preferences and associations of the viewer.

3. Interpretation

Figure 2.4 Week 5 (03/07/2024) Interpretation.

Arrows usually symbolize a goal or destination. It is widely recognized that arrows are commonly used for navigation. The arrow may also represent the Palestinian woman “to move forward.”

The dress that the woman is wearing is Palestinian traditional clothing called “Thobe”. The dress is usually worn on special occasions such as weddings, and celebrations. The dress symbolizes the Palestinian woman's grace, elegance, and pride, and is an important part of the Palestinian cultural identity.

(after week 5) →  After showing my first sketches to Dr. Charles he provided me with invaluable insights, suggesting that I explore more deeply the theme of expressing emotions in artwork. As I had chosen to center my work on the ongoing and devastating genocide in Palestine, I attempted to convey feelings of despair and sadness in my sketches. However, I felt unsatisfied with the level of emotional intensity in my work. I felt that it failed to fully capture the gravity of the situation and the harrowing experiences of those affected by the conflict. Therefore, I resolved to delve deeper into the topic and do research. So I could be able to effectively convey the raw emotions and experiences of the people affected by the conflict and will resonate with viewers.

The objective is to create artwork that revolves around the emotional state of anger, conveying aggression. To achieve this, I researched the methods to illustrate anger through different media.

Figure 2.5 Week 5 (03/07/2024) Triptych of cadavers and human, screaming by Darkart357

Portraying anger in artwork involves capturing the intense emotions associated with anger:

1. Use aggressive shapes and lines, such as jagged edges, sharp angles, or broken lines.
2. Anger often utilizes colors that are intense and high-contrast. Red, orange, and yellow are common choices.
3. Use expressive brushstrokes to convey the intensity of the emotions.
4. Depict physical and psychological responses: Angry artwork often shows physical or psychological responses to anger, such as clenched fists, gritted teeth, or clenched jaws, as well as the body language and facial expressions that may accompany it.

Figure 2.6 Week 5 (03/07/2024) Push vs pull.

A pushing or pulling composition can be an effective way to convey the overwhelming feeling of an object, especially if the composition is designed to give the impression that the object is about to either push or pull away from the viewer.

The goal is to create a visual representation that effectively conveys the feeling of being overwhelmed by the object.

1.2 Rationale

The goal that places peace, justice, and strong institutions should aim to bring an end to the ongoing crisis in Palestine and to create a more stable, and peaceful, for all those living in the region. I want to focus on the effects of genocide on children, even if they survive the violence, they often experience trauma, which can have a lasting impact.

Furthermore, children who survive genocide may also be at increased risk of exploitation, abuse, and neglect, as they may be separated from their families. From the media I’ve seen, the children of Palestine have become the backbone of their families, they act, think, and speak like adults. They have to adapt to the reality of death, that they are not prepared to understand.

Do people already forget that they’re children in the first place? this questions me more that the world is still blind to the death of thousands of children in Palestine, the question I had in my mind resolved me to make an artwork of “children are still children” they crave their old life and memories before the genocide, where they could act like their own age. (193 words).

1.3 Progress

1a).    Moodboard

I searched what style/art direction I inspired for the artwork.

Figure 2.7 Week 5 (03/07/2024) Moodboard.

  • My main idea for the artwork is to contrast reality and memories differently by using colors and shading. I took inspiration from Brian Stauffer's artworks, he is known for his energetic brushwork and bold use of color. I have 2 parts of the drawing styles I want to use. I intend to use this kind of bold and dark brushstrokes with the 'reality' part of the drawing.

  • The 'memories' part of the drawing, will have a story tale-like state, and the colors will be warm and much more muted in contrast to the 'reality'. I took inspiration from Najat El-Taji El-Khairy, this artwork was created on porcelain.

1b).    Sketches

Figure 2.10 Week 5 (03/07/2024) Sketch #1 & Sketch #1.5
  • #1 & #1.5 show a figure of a large woman wearing a niqab, below her, is the destruction caused by war, #1 reveals her upper body while #1.5 is another version where her face zooms in. After the feedback, looking at this now I agree that there are no emotions that are clearly conveyed probably due to the woman's blank expression, which makes the message not clear.
Figure 2.11 Week 5 (03/07/2024) Sketch #2 & Sketch #3
  • #2 and #3 are where I decided to add another subject, a man. To say that war causes damage to both men and women, I think I could see the emotions in these more clearly than in the first sketch, but the message doesn't apply to what I want it to be, it's not specific enough.
As you can see here, my attempts focus on the woman as the main subject, which doesn't differentiate my own artwork from the original works I am inspired by, I need to make my own original version and what emotions I want to convey/tell to the viewers.

1c).    Artwork Progress

Figure 2.14 Week 6 (03/14/2024) Color base (1)

This is the first attempt at choosing the color base, I wanted the skin color of the boy who is pulling the cloth to be red because I thought that would show his anger even more, but it turned out to be out of place. The color contrast between the bright yellow and the dull colors of the cloth could work, but it made the bright yellow background the most eye-catching part.

Figure 2.15 Week 6 (03/14/2024) Color base (2)

I adjusted the color by adding saturation, hue, and brightness and changed the bright yellow background to a warm reddish color while still keeping the same texture. I also tried to make the dream part to be more colorful.

I thought the color was already better than the first, but I think the shading is too messy. I used a brush that has the texture of oil paint on canvas since I want the 'dream' part to have a painting style.

Figure 2.16 Week 6 (03/14/2024) attempt at clean line art.

Because I was not satisfied with how the shading and blending looked like, so I re-did the whole thing with cleaner and neater lineart. I also fixed some minor mistakes and added more details.
Figure 2.17 Week 7 (03/21/2024) Line art.

Figure 2.18 Week 7 (03/21/2024) Shading and rendering.

After finishing the lineart, I filled the colors again. I changed the brightness for the 'dream' part again so the colors could help the dream memory to feel it has this sort of safe and calm energy. Now I'm starting to see that these pieces complement each other well (finally!!)

Figure 2.19 Week 7 (03/21/2024) Adding textures.

After adding the shadows, shading, etc. I added an old paper texture to the dream part so it would sort of look like a children's book.

Figure 2.20 Week 7 (03/21/2024) Glow effect.

I was messing around with airbrushes, and it turned out to make this slight soft glow, the soft glow made the dream pop out more and look more dreamy.

Figure 2.21 Week 7 (03/21/2024) Adding fold details for the cloth.

The last step is to add a shadow of the folds to make the boy really pull desperately for his old life/memories to come back.  This part was really tricky for me since I didn't want to ruin the drawing using the dark airbrush, so I tried to add shadows of the fold where I thought the fold would have more effect.

1.4 Final Result

          FEEDBACK

Week 6  03.14.2024

Specific feedback, The use of textures for the sketches is good and could be used for my final task, the sketches are basically the same/ based on the original artwork that I have chosen, so I need to make a piece that is based on my reaction, emotion towards the world and the artwork while still using the design elements.

Week 7  03.18.2024

Specific feedback, I asked about the choice of color to Dr. Charles through Whatsapp, and he said that the colors are fine but the rendering and outlining need adjustment, which is why I need to re-do the outlines.

Week 7  03.21.2024

Specific feedback, My artwork is approved by Dr. Charles, and make sure I don't forget to add folds of the cloth, he added that I don't need to add any text for the artwork.

          REFLECTION

Experience
I really enjoyed this module so far, it allows me to experiment a lot, and it lets my brain think deeper about what illustration I want to make and how I apply it to be impactful for the viewer.

Observations
In design, grabbing the viewer's attention is essential to effectively convey the intended message or emotion, based on the design principles I used contrast as an effective way to draw attention to important elements in my design to create a sense of depth or hierarchy.

Findings
Doing small research even about the things that I may already know about has helped me to have a deeper understanding and how similar people's opinions are to ours. For example, I looked up how to apply emotions about anger in our artwork, and I still learned something new, I didn't know that the use of harsh texture could portray anger.
